The Best Actress winner rocked the red carpet in a gorgeous ivory gown. THIS is how you do neutrals ladies. A HUGE fan of The Help, I am thrilled for her big win. If you haven't read the book or seen the movie, do it now. You will be blown away by this powerful story.

Always one of my red carpet favorites, Sofia Vergara looked AH-mazing in a fuchsia Marchesa mermaid gown. She is absolutely hilarious and never fails to ooze charm and sex appeal.

Julie Bowen, another Modern Family lady, worked the carpet in a gorgeous purple Temperley London gown. She is not normally one of my favorites at awards shows, but she knocked it out of the park this time.

E! host Giuliana Rancic had one of my favorite looks of the evening.

Her red Basil Soda dress complete with a stunning gold necklace was FIERCE.

Deadline to register to vote!

February 6th is the deadline to register for the Georgia Presidential Primary on March 6th. If you aren't registered to vote, please, go do so. Countess people have sacrificed their time, energy, and even their lives in order to have the right to vote. Exercise your constitutional right by voting. If you aren't registered to vote (or if you are and don't vote), please keep your mouth shut when it comes to political issues for which you don't like. Voting is something I am incredibly passionate about...as an American, as a woman, and as an educated constituent. If you don't know who to vote for, take some time to learn about each candidate, so you can make an informed decision. If you think your vote doesn't count, IT DOES. Recent elections (ahem Miami-Dade county) prove that every single vote matters. Let's make the upcoming election one for the books with the highest voter turnout rating in history!

A Somewhat Golden Night

Did you watch last night's Golden Globes Awards? I was entertained but left feeling somewhat underwhelmed. Ricky Gervais was quite tame, and the dresses were just okay. Some ladies hit it out of the park, while others played it safe. Here are some of my favorite looks of the evening.

Charlize Theron stunned in Dior Haute Couture

complete with Cartier jewels.

Her hair and sparkly headband sealed the deal for me.

20s glamour at its finest!

Nicole Kidman rocked the red carpet in a studded Versace gown with Fred Leighton jewelry. Her dress fit her extremely well and flattered her gorgeous physique.

In my opinion, the Golden Globe for Best Dressed goes to...

Sofia Vergara for her peacock colored Vera Wang gown and Harry Winston baubles.

The color was absolutely stunning,

and her gown fit her immaculately.

She has the ultimate hourglass figure

with a crazy personality to boot.

I would have preferred her hair pulled back,

but she looked amazing nonetheless.

Honorable mention goes to Michelle Williams in Jason Wu and Fred Leighton jewels.

Her jeweled headband was the highlight of her look.

In a sea of sculpted blush/nude colored gowns, I appreciate Ms. Williams' daring choice. I have always loved her style and think she is one of our generation's most talented actresses. Her win for My Week with Marilyn was very much deserved, and I wish her the best of luck at future award shows this year. I hope she wins the Oscar for her performance!

Staying fashionable in freezing weather

I saw a few snow flurries on my way to work this morning.

I'm actually excited that January is finally starting to feel like winter.

My experience is that if we have a warmer December and January,

February and March will be brutally cold.

How do you stay fashionable when it's freezing outside?

I find the best way to stay warm and stylish during the cold winter months is to add bright pops of color with my accessories.

You are not forgotten

Today marks the two-year anniversary of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Having seen the destruction firsthand, I can attest to how much work still needs to be done to repair Port-au-Prince and return people to their homes. I will never forget my time in Haiti, and I hope that we never forget how much our Haitian friends continue to suffer.

They lack basic necessities such as clean water, food, and shelter. The recovery and rebuilding process is extremely slow, but our donations will make a difference.

I know there's been a lot of controversy in the recent past surrounding misuse of donated funds. Organizations (I believe) we can trust are the American Red Cross, Oxfam, and the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund.

If you aren't in the position to donate financially, you can simply pray for the Haitian people. They are incredibly warm, loving, and friendly. Just like us, they long to be healthy, happy, and successful. This is all most people want it seems. Unfortunately, not all of us live in a country where this is possible. Haiti's long-term economic, political, and social problems have plagued its' people for many years. While I certainly don't have a solution to fix all of Haiti's issues, I know we can start by donating our money, time, and love to them. Let's honor the 316,000 people who died on January 12, 2010 with our gifts.

Resolutions

As the new year kicks off, people across the world commit to all sorts of resolutions. Varying from losing weight to kicking a bad habit, we all start January with these goals fresh in our minds. Come February (or even the end of January), many people fall off the bandwagon. They realize they won't lose 15 pounds in one month or workout 5 days per week, so they give up all together.

Instead of making such unrealistic expectations, why not commit to a lifetime of healthy living? Aim to workout 3-5 times/week, eat healthy as much as possible, and spend more time outside. When you think of your resolutions as lifetime commitments, they take on a whole new meaning. Your month of eating well and daily workouts will turn into a lifetime of healthy living. If you mess up, don't give up. Keep on trying-don't beat yourself up and give up all together. It's not the end of the world. Trust me, I know from experience.

While I'm no size two and certainly no fitness expert, I eat relatively well and workout on a consistent basis. For the most part, I know that I'm doing what I can to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Sure, I could stand to "tighten" up and make better food choices. But, you'll never see me do some crazy, fad diet because I know it won't last. Fad diets are just that-fads. I do what I can when I can, and that's good enough for me.

Many of you know that tomorrow is my birthday-I'll be turning 31 on December 31st, my Golden Birthday. While I know that 31 isn't 21 (thank goodness!), I know that I am still very young. God willing, I have many years ahead of me to see amazing sights, to love and help others, and to pursue my dreams. Not everyone has that chance, so I feel blessed to be turning 31. The average life expectancy in Haiti is 31-anytime I worry about not being a spring chicken anymore, I think about this and feel blessed to keep celebrating birthdays. In honor of the countless people who never got to celebrate their 31st birthday, I am incredibly blessed and honored. Make the most of every year, every day, and every minute. Cheers!

Take a moment this Christmas

With just 3 days before Christmas, I'm sure many of you are feeling overwhelmed with last minute items on your to-do list. Instead of stressing over ever last detail, take a moment to give thanks for the meaning of the season. For me, I kick it old school-Jesus is the reason for the season. Regardless of your beliefs, I know we ALL have at least one blessing in our life. It could be your family, your friends, your pet, your job, your health, or anything that's special and important to you.

If you still have gifts you buy and don't want to fights the crowds in stores, order something online. Or, take it one step further and make a donation to the recipient's favorite charitable cause. The best way we can collectively celebrate the holiday season is to give back. If you're out of funds, give with your time, your smile, your energy, and your positive attitude. Let someone go in front of you in line, pay for the person's coffee behind you, or help an elderly person cross the street. Taking a moment to offer up a prayer of thanks will help alleviate the pressure many people feel during this time of year. Your loved ones will be glad that you're focusing on your blessings instead of finding the perfect gift, cooking the most amazing meal of the year, or deep cleaning the house. When's it's all said and done, you'll look back on the happy memories spent with loved ones not how great the turkey tasted (or how bad it turned out ;). Merry Christmas!

As you plan your upcoming holiday meals, think carefully about what items you'll be using. Instead of using disposable plates, consider serving your meals on your regular dinner plates. If you're married, bust out your wedding china and other items you don't use often (or ever). Now is the time to use the gifts for which your friends and family paid a LOT of money. If you absolutely have to use disposable items, buy ones that are made of recycled materials and are compostable or recyclable. Don't forget to encourage your guests to utilize your recycling and compost bins during your events and parties. There's just no need to create any extra waste during the holidays. On average, Americans throw away 25% more trash from Thanksgiving to New Years. This is outrageous! Let's make a pledge not to add to the problem but be a part of the solution. Go green this holiday season!

Happy December friends! I can't believe 2011 is almost over. This year has honestly flown by. It's been an interesting year-from losing a job, to going to Italy and Haiti, to getting a job I LOVE. I turn 31 in 30 days (12/31/11), so I've decided that December will be 31 Days of Fun for me! Thanks to my beloved show Modern Family, I realized that I have been somewhat of an old lady lately. I used to go out and do fun things on a regular basis. Now, I find myself falling asleep watching TV around 9:30 and going to the movies instead of going out and meeting new people. NO MORE! Here's to 31 Days of Fun in December. Care to join in?

I hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! With Christmas in mind, make sure to go green by reusing old gift bags. I cringe when I see people throw away barely used gift bags (which aren't cheap!), tissue paper, etc. Be a friend to the environment by saving these items to use again. When you go to wrap your gifts, you'll have everything you need. I'm going to keep writing about this every year until I don't see people throw this stuff away anymore.

Thankful

I'm not going to lie; it's been a rough year. I lost my job in May-for the 3rd year in a row. A person can only handle getting laid off so many times, right? As always, God carried me through this trying time and blessed me in so many other ways. I'm thankful for countless blessings this year, but these are the top ones:

1) An amazing trip to Haiti with an AWESOME team of people. The trip was quite challenging, but I would do it again in a heartbeat.
2) Finally getting a job that I LOVE. I was beginning to think that this might not ever happen, and it did. I love my job, and I'm incredibly thankful for this opportunity.
3) A wonderful trip to Italy to see my brother and sister-in-law. It was my first real vacation in years, and it was perfect.
4) My wonderful friends who always support me, love me, and make me laugh. I could not have gotten through the past 3 years without them.
5) My family. I love them SO much. They inspire me to be a better person every single day.
6) My sweet dog Georgia. She is my little ray of sunshine, and I love her more and more each day.
7) My Heavenly Father. He's the man. I absolutely could NOT have gotten through the past 3-4 years without His love, grace, and mercy. He just plain rocks. He's the God of second (okay countless) changes, and He never fails to amaze me with His blessings.

I'm also thankful for you, dear readers. Thanks for letting me share my thoughts, opinions, hopes, and dreams with you. I know they're ALL over the place, but so am I. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday, no matter where you are or what you do. If you're thankful for someone this year, let them know. Life is short, so let's lift each other up with encouraging words. Happy Thanksgiving sweet friends!

Be thankful for leftovers

If you read my blog on a regular basis, you know that I write about leftovers frequently. As the holiday season gets into full swing over the next few weeks, please keep leftovers in mind. Try your best to make the appropriate amount of food, so you don't end up with tons of leftovers. If you find yourself with leftovers on your hands, go green by sending leftovers home with friends or making sure to eat them, freeze them, etc.

Leftovers can be tricky. I know that it's not always exciting to eat the same thing 4-5 times. When I don't feel like eating my leftover soup, casserole, or other item, I try to think about the millions of people who are starving all over the world. I know they would give anything for food (of any kind) to eat. That definitely changes my attitude about my meal. Let's all be thankful for having food to eat at each meal because many people don't have anything to eat and go to bed hungry each night.

Don't be afraid to ask

I’m a firm believer in asking for what you want. You’d be surprised that sometimes, all you have to do to get what you want is to ASK FOR IT. This simple concept eludes many people because they are either too scared to ask for what they want, or they don’t want to come across as rude, demanding, or high maintenance. Since I don’t fall into either of these two categories (scared or extreme people pleaser), I have a lot of experience in this arena.

I have gotten many cool things in life because I asked for them. Often times it’s something simple like a better table at a restaurant (or sitting in the private dough room at Antico) or a complimentary sample of an item. But sometimes it’s something bigger-like an upgrade at a nice hotel or the chance to do something amazing.

Always remember to ask nicely-this is the most important thing. Smiling and being genuinely friendly can get you far in life. People like to help nice people. I’m pretty sure it also helps to be a Southern woman, but not everyone has that going for them.

When it comes to getting what you want in life, don’t be afraid to ask for it. The answer will always be no if you don’t ask. But it just might be yes if you do.

As you think about Halloween this year, take a look in your closet. Instead of buying or renting a costume, go green by using items you already have to create a custom costume. This isn't a new idea, but I think it's a great one. You could also do a costume swap with friends, so you can all have a "new" costume this year. Organize away

As the seasons change, now is the time to clean out your closet. Go green by going through each item to determine if you want to keep it, repair it, or give it away. Your "trash" could be someone else's treasure. I highly recommend organizing your closet by category and then again by color. This might be a bit much for some, but I promise that it makes getting ready SO much easier. I even have subcategories such as casual dresses and work/formal dresses.

Organizing your wardrobe is beneficial for many reasons. You streamline your wardrobe by getting rid of what you don't wear, and you can figure out what you can still wear that needs repair. (My general rule of thumb is that I get rid of an item if I haven't worn it in the past year.) You also give back by donating your gently used items to someone who will treasure them. You'll be surprised how organizing your closet and pairing down your wardrobe gives a whole new light to what you already own. How do you organize your closet?

I'm starting a new job tomorrow and feel like it's the first day of school. Since I lost my job back in May, I've been "off" all summer. I've kept busy with trips to Italy and Haiti and a LOT of babysitting. As I get ready for my first day on the new job tomorrow, I can't help but feel a bit of anticipation, nervousness, and excitement. What do I wear? (typically an easy and fun question for me) Should I bring a lunch or just hope for a chance to go out and grab something? Do I ask every question I have or play it cool? Needless to say, I am very excited for this new opportunity and feel incredibly blessed to have it. Stay tuned...

To print or not to print, that is the question

As I get ready to start my new job (more about that soon), I have to remind myself to be very conservative when printing. With email being the main communication method these days, I don't see the need to constantly print out everything. Try going green by only printing something when you absolutely need to. Consider printing on both sides of the paper and printing in black and white (color hues are typically more toxic). You can also use the other side as scratch paper. Don't forget to recycle your paper as well. Since the average U.S. office worker uses *10,000* sheets of paper per year, please keep this in mind when you click Print.

Instead of leaving your computer up and running every day, consider going green by shutting it down at the end of the day. Unless your company is going to install updates on it overnight, there is no need to leave it turned on all night. Change the settings to make the computer "sleep" during short breaks and make sure to power it down when you're done for the day. Remember, screen savers don't actually save any power. There's just no need to waste electricity on something like this. Go one step further by turning off the power strip and any lights in your office as well. At EVERY company I've worked, people try to appear to always be working be leaving their lights on all the time. First of all, this is just silly and stupid. We all know when someone isn't there! And, it is a complete waste of electricity. Make sure to turn off anything that has an on/off switch in addition to unplugging things like cell phone chargers from the wall. They call these items vampire appliances for a reason ;)

My favorite time of year started last night-award season! I live for award season like some people live for fantasy football. Or baseball season. Or March Madness. You get the point. I absolutely LOVE the glitz and glam of the red carpet coupled with the anticipation of who will win each award. Jane Lynch hosted the Emmy's last night, and she was fabulous. She looked great, was appropriately funny, and seemed very confident. Job well done!

I was slightly underwhelmed with last night's fashions, but here are my top picks. The Emmy for best dressed goes to:

Lea Michele! She stunned us all in her gorgeous fiery red Marchesa gown. The back of her dress was to die for! Ms. Michele has become a style icon over the past year or so. I look forward to seeing what she wears next. Click here and here to see her past award-winning looks.

Sofia Vergara rocked the red carpet in an assymetrical Vera Wang gown. It doesn't take much to make her look sexy.

Modern Family's Sarah Hyland looked very grown up and gorgeous in her custom Christian Siriano gown that she says she helped design. Congratulations to the cast and crew of Modern Family who took home a ton of awards. Funniest comedy on air right now!

An honorable mention goes to the always lovely Cat Deeley for her Monique Lhuillier gown. Well done Cat!

Missoni for Target, oh MY!

So, I've been waiting for today for many months now. The Missoni for Target line hit stores. I showed up at 7:45 AM (my store opens at 8:00 AM) and was shocked to see that there were already about 15 people waiting in line. WOW!

I knew this launch would be huge, but I had no idea that SO many people were also anxiously waiting to see it. Good thing I wore workout clothes and tennis shoes because I literally RAN through the store to see everything. It was like Christmas morning...if you do Christmas at Target that is. The line is absolutely gorgeous! The quality of the items is amazing. Target's Web site actually crashed early this morning (and is STILL down) because so many people were trying to place orders online. Oh, to be a member of the Missoni clan right now...

Are you a daily coffee drinker? Who isn't these days? I'm not, but I used to be. I decided to quit drinking caffeine over three years ago to see if it helped my insomnia. I still crave coffee a LOT and occasionally drink decaf. If you do drink coffee each day, consider going green by buying fair trade and/or eco-friendly coffee. The purpose of fair trade is to

9/11/01: We will never forget

On the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, I hope the victim's loved ones know that we will never, ever forget. We lift up their loved ones in prayer today. We also say a prayer of thanks for the incredibly brave servicemen and women, law enforcement officers, and other government officials who work tirelessly to protect us. Thank you for your sacrifice. May all of the victims from 9/11/01 rest in peace.

I need to apologize for the lack of quality posts over the past few months. It's been a rough summer, and I haven't felt particularly inspired lately. I hate that I feel this way because I am usually quite easily inspired. A quick walk with Georgia, a trip to the store, or reading my favorite book can make my thoughts race with anticipation, joy, and excitement. I'm ready for some changes in my life...a new job, a new city, a new something. Thank goodness that summer is on its way out because I am also ready for a change in this horribly hot, humid weather we've been experiencing in Georgia since April. Change is on the horizon, and I am ready.

If you haven't heard of TOMS, have you been living under a rock the past five years? I've enjoyed watching this brand grow and have the utmost respect for its vision. TOMS gives a child in need a pair of shoes when you buy a pair. It is that simple. I don't think I'm alone when I say that you always wonder whether or not this actually happens. Trust me, TOMS is the real deal. When I was in Haiti in July, we saw so many kids sporting TOMS. How cool is that? Not everyone can afford a pair of shoes, so it was refreshing to watch how one company chose to make a difference and provide this very basic need.

As TOMS grows, so does its line. At its inception, TOMS only had one basic style in a handful of colors. Now, you can get just about any color and TONS of cool styles. Check out all the fun ways you can wear TOMS in the pictures above. I don't have any yet, but a red pair is on my F/W '11 wish list. When I first saw people wearing TOMS around Atlanta, I was not too keen on the style. Now, I love it. They are great for running errands, walking the dog, sightseeing, and more.

I don't know about you, but I am obsessed with Drew Barrymore's recently dyed red hair. I think it looks absolutely stunning on her. I've always been a HUGE Drew fan, and now I love her even more. Since less than 2% of the world's population has (natural) red hair, I love when I see another beautiful redhead. While I realize that Drew is not a natural redhead, she looks amazing with her fiery locks. Of course, I have to pose the question: do redheads really have more fun? Why yes, yes we do!

Thoughts: Friend or foe?

I was thinking about some things yesterday, and I had to stop myself. See, I tend to get WAY too carried away in my own thoughts. I have a lot of time (more than I need) on my hands these days to just sit and think, and sometimes I let my thoughts and feelings get the best of me. Okay, most of the time I do so.

It's like the more time I have to think about my life and the situations in it, the more twisted and crazy my reality becomes in my own mind. Not in a scary or demented sense, I'm just not sure that all this time to think is really doing me any good. It's almost like I need a mental babysitter because I shouldn't be left alone with my own thoughts for too long. Am I the only one who feels this way? Or, do others also let their thoughts run wild and get carried away with crazy notions all day long?

The mind is an extremely powerful place-MUCH more powerful than any machine. It's where our creativity lies...where our hopes, dreams, and fantasies manifest themselves into potentially tangible items. The mind is also where anger, jealousy, rage, envy, greed, and pride lie waiting to devour us. The smallest negative thought can eat away at you until you wake up one day and believe that it's the truth.

Be careful friends. If you think it, it will come. If you can imagine it, it can be a possibility. So, think big, think happy, and think smart.

Don't let your money go down the drain

Today's go green tip is an interesting one. Not sure if you have a leak in your toilet? Remove the lid to the tank and put in several drops of food coloring (something dark like red, blue, or green). Wait 20-30 minutes. If the water in the toilet bowl remains clear, you don't have a leak. This is a great way to stop letting your water and money go down the drain.

I don't know about you, but I am O-V-E-R summer this year. I feel like we've had summer since April, and I'm ready for some cooler weather. I want to wear jeans, boots, and scarves, drink spiced cider, and not sweat when I walk my dog. The dog days of summer linger on as I yearn for fall.

Got sunscreen?

This isn't exactly a go green tip, but I think it's incredibly important. We all know it's a pain to apply sunscreen before spending time in the sun. Trust me, it drives me crazy, but I wear it every day. The next time you feel tempted not to wear sunscreen, remember this photo.

Pictured above are two identical twins, age 61. The woman on the left wore sunscreen throughout her life. Her sister did not. Just some food for thought when you think about baking at the pool/beach all day or (it pains me to even have to say it) go to the tanning bed.

Don't do it!

As the weather seems to get warmer by the minute, my naturally thick, very curly hair feels like a wig on my head at times. I think about cutting my hair short at least 10 times/day it seems. I have to keep in mind that my hair won't look like this if I cut it short.

There is a MUCH greater chance that I would end up looking like this.

What's a girl with long, thick, and very curly hair to do in this sweltering heat? Don't get me wrong, I am incredibly thankful to have hair (because some people don't for various reasons) that is naturally thick. It just gets crazy hot in the summer months. I also have trouble getting the right haircut. Whenever I start to feel like pulling a Britney, I have to remember that I will regret it when the weather cools off. So at this rate, in 3-4 more months.

Eat, Pray, Love?

I hope that you've enjoyed reading about my adventures in Italy and Haiti this summer. As August begins, I find myself reflecting on my summer.

I've had the opportunity to eat...

And I've had the opportunity to pray...

I'm still waiting for the love portion of the "Eat, Pray, Love" equation to happen.

Where is my Javier Bardem? I've been waiting all summer to meet my tall, dark, and handsome prince. Ok, I'll be honest: I've been waiting 30+ years to meet my very own tall drink of water!

While I didn't enjoy every part of Eat, Pray, Love, I think we all were swept away in the decadent and sometimes painful journey Elizabeth Gilbert allowed us to share with her in her 2006 novel and 2010 film starring the lovely Julia Roberts and aforementioned Bardem.

I'd like to think that I am on my own exciting and amazing journey. Lately, it seems to have more than its' fair share of pit stops, dead ends, and disasters. But it is my journey, and I know that everything will work out the way it should in the end. Will I meet my own Bardem? Who knows? I surely hope so, but we don't have any guarantee of romantic love in this life. For now, I'm going to try my best to focus on the love I share with my family and friends. You never know...maybe my very own soul mate is on his personal journey searching for me along the way.
